Overview
The Elder is the pinnacle boss behind the Key to Decay fragment set, and the cheapest of the major Atlas bosses to open. It is widely considered the easiest of them: relatively simple mechanics, a single genuine one-shot, and less life than The Shaper, Sirus or The Maven. Every kill drops one guaranteed unique and one of the two Uber Elder fragments, and it is the only source of the two-modifier Watcher's Eye — which is where most of the money sits.
Setup
One run consumes a full Key to Decay set placed in the map device: Fragment of Purification, Fragment of Constriction, Fragment of Enslavement and Fragment of Eradication. Nothing else is consumed. The fragments drop from the Elder Guardians, occasionally from fragment rewards, and trade freely, so the set can simply be bought. The arena is Absence of Value and Meaning.
The Encounter
Bring roughly 1 million DPS, capped elemental resistances, at least 5,000 combined life and energy shield, and some physical mitigation — nearly everything the Elder throws is physical or cold.
Phase 1 is a straightforward damage race. The only mechanic that reliably kills is the Expanding Nova: a ring grows outward from the Elder and detonates, and survival means standing inside the inner ring, not running from it. The Siphon cone drains life and cuts action speed by 60% while feeding the Elder energy shield, so step out of it. Kill the Madness Propagators quickly or the floor fills with eldritch decay.
At 25% life the Shaper captures the Elder and channels four restraints, 35 seconds each. The Elder is invulnerable here and the entire phase is about keeping the Shaper alive against waves of Madness Propagators from Null Portals. Body-block their projectiles, or use minions, totems or Frost Wall; the Shaper counts as an ally and can be healed and buffed. If he dies, the fight continues but the Watcher's Eye is gone.
Phase 3 restores the Elder to full life but roots it in place, adding multiple simultaneous novas and an arena-wide Pulse Nova. At zero life it charges a lethal final blast — run into Zana's bubble in the lower right of the arena or die to it. The Elder cannot be culled here, and leaving through the portal only defers the blast to your return.
How These Numbers Were Calculated
Nobody ran a hundred Elders with a spreadsheet for this. The sample is synthetic: a modelled 100 kills built from the drop rates published on the PoE Wiki, where a 3% chance is counted three times, a guaranteed drop a hundred times, and expenses are one fragment set priced at market and multiplied by the same 100 runs. The guaranteed unique pool checks out — Cyclopean Coil, Blasphemer's Grasp, Impresence, Hopeshredder, Nebuloch and Shimmeron sum to exactly 100%, one unique per kill. The Decayed Voidstone is excluded because it drops once ever, and the Watcher's Eye is counted at its full 40% on the assumption the Shaper survives Phase 2 every time.
Those rates are estimates. They come from a community sample of 845 kills spanning versions 3.25.0 to 3.27.0, and the wiki itself notes actual rates may vary. Two entries are approximate on the source table and one is an upper bound. Over a realistic session of ten or twenty kills, results will not resemble these figures.
Most of the value is concentrated in two drops. The two-modifier Watcher's Eye alone accounts for about 52% of modelled profit at a 40% drop chance, and the Orb of Dominance for a further 16% at roughly 2%. Together that is two thirds of the return riding on one common-ish drop and one rare one. Ten kills with no Watcher's Eye worth listing is an ordinary run of luck, not a sign the strategy is broken — and a single Orb of Dominance can carry a whole evening on its own.
